Holy Cheesecake Batman! A trip to the Cheesecake Corner & Wine and Quiche Bar in Memphis, TN

When you think of Memphis, Tennessee you might think of Stax Records, Elvis, Gus's Original Fried Chicken, and....Cheesecake, right?  What? Cheesecake? Memphis? Yes my friends, despite not even being a "cheesecake person", and despite having lived in New York City for the last ten years, which many deem the cheesecake capital of the world, I had one of the top five, yes, TOP FIVE favorite slices of cake I have ever had at the Cheesecake Corner & Wine & Quiche Bar in Memphis Tennessee.  This shabby chic cafe is located in an adorable historic building in the arts and design district just off of South Main Street.  Of the many cheesecake and tart flavors offered I chose the carrot cake cheesecake, which was a layer carrot cake moist and delicious, sandwiched between two layers of traditional cheesecake and topped with a blanket of cream cheese frosting.  After I bit into the first forkful, I was temporarily stunned with the flavor explosion.  The only thing I could think was why the hell can't every dessert taste this damn good..., and then proceeded to make "What About Bob" like noises and cannonballing my black coffee after every amazing bite.

Now, I read reviews on urban spoon about the owner, Kevin Matthews (click on link to read a great article about how he got started from the Memphis Daily News), having an attitude, but I have to tell you, our service was great.  The young man behind the counter made recommendations, and knew exactly when to come over and refresh our coffees.  Perfection.  It was early and the owner was there briefly doing paperwork at a table in the back, and he did have a fabulous air about him but, in my opinion if you make cheesecake that tastes like what angels might feast on, then by all means, have some swagger my friend. I'm hoping I can order these cakes and that they deliver out of town, because they will fast become my secret weapon at special occasions where I truly want to impress....Yumm-town USA!
